Using the Web to Make a Picture Collage
Most of us learned how to make a picture collage at some stage in elementary school. Usually the art of the collage then disappears for a decade until our 18th or 21st birthday celebrations, when parents or friends will use a corkboard collage to commemorate friendships and highlight our most embarrassing fashion choices and hairstyles over the years.
Even social media platforms are embracing the art of the collage. In February this year, to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the world’s most popular and widely used social media platform, Facebook launched the ‘Look Back’ feature allowing users to view a 15 second video summary of their life on Facebook so far.
From Photos to a Photo Wall
Dispute the power of video to capture many aspects of a moment, there remains an allure to still images frozen in time. The following websites are just a few that allow people to upload their own photos and create collages for print or for use online, e.g. as a Facebook cover image.
- Picisto: Quickly and easily create vision boards and photo collages in a range of formats for print, digital and social-media specific presentation. This is perhaps the most widely utilized media tool for creating picture collages.
- Pic Scatter: Pic Scatter will automatically create a Facebook timeline cover collage based on your Facebook photo albums, Facebook likes, and photos of your friends.
- PosterFuse: Sign in with your Facebook or Instagram account and start adding photos to the canvas or opt to upload photos from your own computer. PosterFuse offers added functions letting you crop, toggle effects, enhance contrast and more.
- PiZap: Similar to PosterFuse, this tool is a little more restrictive in that it only provides 13 layouts for Facebook cover collages and is only able to fit up to 12 images in each. On the upside, the photo editing features are quite comprehensive.
The fact that we now have so many options available to us means that everyone can now make a picture collage simply and quickly right from our browsers. If you prefer to create from your smartphone, there are now countless apps available for our portable devices that are just as powerful as the web-based versions.
